An affluent residential suburb and former estate of the City of Edinburgh, Ravelston lies 2 miles (3 km) west of the city centre. Ravelston House was built c.1790 for the Keith family, but the estate was broken up in the 20th century, with the house and parkland immediately adjacent being developed for Mary Erskine School from 1964. The white International-style Ravelston Garden blocks were the work of Neil & Hurd in 1935. The Dean Gallery, Scottish Gallery of Modern Art and Daniel Stewart's and Melville College are situated in this locality. Ravelston Park and Ravelston Woods Local Nature Reserve are managed by the City of Edinburgh Council.
