Cardenden Railway Station (known in Gaelic as Uachdair Doirein) lies on the Fife Circle Line, at Dundonald, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) west of Cardenden and a similar distance south of Bowhill in Fife. This station opened in 1848 on the Dunfermline Branch of the Edinburgh & Northern Railway, which was taken over by the North British Railway in 1862. Between 1969 and 1989, this station was a terminus, until the section of line to Thornton re-opened completing the Fife Circle Line. Now rather bleak, with a functional passenger shelter, Cardenden Railway Station is operated by ScotRail. A bridge crosses between the two platforms. It is unstaffed and used by 62,312 passengers per annum (2016). It is preceded by Lochgelly Railway Station, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the west, and followed by Glenrothes with Thornton, 5 miles (8 km) to the east northeast.
