A semi-rural railway station on the Ayrshire Coast Line, Glengarnock (known in Gaelic as Gleann Gairneag) is located on the edge of the once-industrial village of the same name, 1¼ miles (2 km) south southeast of Kilbirnie and 2 miles (3 km) west southwest of Beith in North Ayrshire.
This two-platform station opened in 1840 on the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, then named Glengarnock and Kilbirnie, but this changed in 1905 when Kilbirnie got its own station on another line, although this closed in 1966.
Now operated by ScotRail, Glengarnock Railway Station is staffed part-time and offers direct services into Glasgow Central. It was used by 369,000 passengers per annum, which represents consistent growth from 269,052 in 2009-10. It is preceded by Dalry Railway Station, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the southwest, and followed by Lochwinnoch, 4½ miles (7 km) to the northeast.
