Hillington West Railway Station

(Hillington an Iar)

Hillington West (referred to in Gaelic as Hillington an Iar) is a suburban railway station on both the Ayrshire Coast Line and the Inverclyde Line. It is located between Penilee and Hillington Industrial Estate in Glasgow City. Opened in 1940 as Hillington, it was renamed Hillington West in 1952 and comprises two platforms linked by an overbridge and a utilitarian flat-roofed station building. The demand between Glasgow and Paisley was such that there were once four parallel railway tracks here, but these were reduced to two on electrification in 1967 and increased once again to three to cope with additional traffic as part of the Paisley Corridor Improvement Project (2011-12). Operated by ScotRail, this station is staffed part-time and was used by 232,424 passengers per annum in 2009-10, a number which had risen to 429,000 by 2014-15. It is preceded by Hillington East Railway Station, a half-mile (1 km) to the east southeast, and followed by Paisley Gilmour Street, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the west southwest.
