Kilmaurs Railway Station

(Cill Mhàrais)

Kilmaurs Railway Station (referred to in Gaelic as Cill Mhàrais) is a halt on the Glasgow South Western Line, just to the southwest of the centre of the village of Kilmaurs in East Ayrshire. It opened in 1873 on the Glasgow, Barrhead & Kilmarnock Joint Railway but was closed in 1966 a victim of railway rationalisation. The line remained open but was reduced to a single track, and the second platform demolished. The station reopened on the 12th May 1984 and the solitary platform was extended in 2009 to cope with longer trains. Now operated by ScotRail, Kilmaurs Station is unstaffed and was used by 81,032 passengers in 2010 but this had increased to almost 110,000 in 2015. It is preceded by Stewarton Railway Station, 3 miles (5 km) to the north, and followed by Kilmarnock, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the south southeast.
