Leuchars Railway Station

(Leuchars Junction, Luacharas)

A busy railway station and former junction in NE Fife, Leuchars (Gael: Luacharas) lies on the East Coast Main Line, a half-mile (1 km) southwest of Leuchars and a similar distance north of Guardbridge. This station first opened in 1848 on the Edinburgh & Northern Railway and became the junction for a branch that was built to St. Andrews four years later. This branch was extended to Anstruther in 1887, connecting onwards to Leven and Kirkcaldy. The line to the north originally went to Tayport for the ferry across the Firth of Tay to Dundee, but another junction was installed in 1878 to take a line to the new Tay Bridge. Both the St. Andrews and the Tayport branches closed in the 1960s, leaving Leuchars as a straightforward through-station.

Now operated by ScotRail, Leuchars Railway Station is staffed part-time. There is a 150-vehicle car park adjacent and a regular bus service to St. Andrews. Passenger numbers have steadily increased over recent years and the station is now used by more than 560,000 people each year (2016). Leuchars is preceded by Cupar Railway Station, 6 miles (10 km) to the southwest, and followed by Dundee, a similar distance to the north northwest.
