Mallaig Railway Station

(Malaig)

The terminus of the West Highland Line in Lochaber, Mallaig Railway Station (Gael: Malaig) lies close to Mallaig Harbour and the ferry terminal which is the gateway to Skye and the Small Isles. Operated by ScotRail, Mallaig Station is staffed part-time and is used by 87,862 passengers per annum (2009-10). This station opened in 1901 and comprises a traditional station house and ticket office, with an island platform that was once covered by a glass canopy (removed in 1975). There are also sidings for goods, which originally extended into the harbour, which was built and once owned by the West Highland Railway Company, but were lifted in 1968 as the transportation of fish by rail had become unpopular. There was once also a turntable, needed to turn engines for the return journey to Glasgow Queen Street. Today, in addition to scheduled diesel services, The Jacobite offers a regular steam service between Mallaig and Fort William for tourists. Mallaig is followed by Morar Railway Station, 2½ miles (4 km) to the south.
