Markinch Railway Station (Gael: Marc-Innis) is situated on the East Coast Main Line, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) east southeast of the town centre and 1½ miles (2.5 km) east of Glenrothes in Fife. Opened on the Edinburgh & Northern Railway in 1847, it is now operated by ScotRail, staffed part-time and used by 251,744 passengers per annum (2009-10). The station was completely redeveloped at a cost £5 million in 2007, with longer platforms, a new ticket office and waiting room. The original Italianate station buildings by Thomas Grainger (1794 - 1852) remain and are now B-listed, but were placed on the Buildings at Risk Register in 2014. Markinch is preceded by Kirkcaldy Railway Station, 6 miles (10 km) to the south southwest, and followed by Ladybank, 5 miles (8 km) to the north.
