A busy railway station in East Ayrshire, Stewarton (referred to as Baile nan Stiùbhartach in Gaelic) lies on the Glasgow South Western Line in the town centre. This station opened on the Glasgow, Barrhead & Kilmarnock Joint Railway in 1871. It closed in 1966, a victim of Dr. Beeching's rationalisation of the railways but reopened within months owing to local demand but on what had become a single-track line. The double-track line was restored in 2009 and a second platform built here. Now operated by ScotRail, Stewarton Railway Station is unstaffed but used by 322,000 passengers annually (2016). It is preceded by Dunlop Railway Station, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the north northwest, and followed by Kilmaurs, 3 miles (5 km) to the south.
