Tyndrum Lower Railway Station

(Taigh an Droma Ìochdrach)

The older of two railway stations which persist in the little village of Tyndrum in NW Stirling through an accident of geography, Tyndrum Lower (Gael: Taigh an Droma Ìochdrach) lies on the Oban Branch of the West Highland Line, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) west southwest of the centre of the village. This station opened as the terminus of the Callander & Oban Railway in 1873, and remained so until the line extended to Dalmally four years later. When the eastern section of the Callander & Oban closed in 1965, it was more convenient to use an existing link to join the Oban Branch and West Highland Line at Crianlarich rather than at Tyndrum where there is a considerable elevation difference between them.

Now operated by ScotRail, Tyndrum Lower Railway Station is unstaffed. Although once having two platforms on either side of a passing loop, and a goods yard, it now comprises just a solitary platform on a single-track line. The station was used by almost 5500 passengers in 2015. It is preceded by Crianlarich Railway Station, 5 miles (8 km) to the southeast, and followed by Dalmally, 10½ miles (17 km) to the west.
