Fairlie Tunnel

A railway tunnel which routes the Ayrshire Coast Line beneath the much of the village of Fairlie in North Ayrshire, the Fairlie Tunnel opened in 1882 and extends to 887m (2913 feet) in length. The village is pressed into a narrow strip of land between the steep hills the east and the Firth of Clyde to the west, hence the need for the tunnel. The original double-track line has been reduced to a single track.
