Knightswood Tunnel

A railway tunnel in Glasgow City, the Knightswood Tunnel conveys the North Clyde and Argyle Lines between Westerton and Anniesland, 3 miles (5 km) northwest of the city centre. Built for the Glasgow City and District Railway Company in 1886 and extending to 247m (810 feet), it cuts beneath Bearsden Road, Temple Road, the Forth and Clyde Canal and the southwestern edge of Dawsholm Park. The north portal, at the Westerton end, was constructed of sandstone while, at the Anniesland entrance former cast-iron supports beneath the canal were re-inforced with pre-stressed concrete beams in 1998. The tunnel is lined with a mix of brickwork and masonry. Water ingress required remedial works in 2015-16.
