The Pyramid at Anderston

(Anderston Parish Church, Anderston Kelvingrove Church)

A prominent B-listed building on the south side of Argyle Street in the Anderston district of Glasgow, the Pyramid represents a community-owned and run hub lying to the west of the centre of Glasgow, beyond the M8 Motorway. It was built in 1965-68 as Anderston Parish Church, designed by architects Honeyman, Jack & Robertson. It replaced three previous churches that were demolished as part of the comprehensive re-development of the Anderston Cross area in the 1960s. The building comprises a substantial elevated square-plan two-storey structure with a soaring pyramidal roof, clad in green-weathered copper, and an unusual shuttered concrete belltower, reminicent of a ventilation shaft. The main sanctuary is augmented by two halls and a further twenty-two rooms. Through congregational mergers it became Anderston Kelvingrove Church in 1978 but another merger in 2019 rendered the church building surplus to requirements and it was sold by the Church of Scotland to the newly-created Pyramid at Anderston Trust, supported by a grant from the Scottish Land Fund. A further grant of £1.1 million from the National Lottery Community Fund has allowed the Trust to undertake a programme of renovation and improvements beginning in 2021.
