Mauricewood

A northern extension of the town of Penicuik, Mauricewood comprises a late 20th century private housing development at the foot of the Pentland Hills. The district takes its name from a modest Victorian mansion built in 1836 and extended in 1897 by Dr. Joseph Bell (1837 - 1911), the Edinburgh surgeon who inspired Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930). The house also gave its name to the former Mauricewood Pit, which was the site of a tragic mining disaster on 5th September 1889 when an underground fire killed 63 miners.
