A ruined Mediaeval church on the southeast coast of the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, Kildalton Chapel lies 6 miles (10 km) to the northeast of Port Ellen. The 9th-century Christian wheel cross in the chapel burial ground is the finest of its kind outside Iona. Known as the Great Cross, it stands 2.65m (8¾ feet) in height. Just beyond the burial ground is the disc-headed 'Small Cross' which is Mediaeval and 1.94m (6¼ feet) in height. Both crosses are scheduled ancient monuments. Within the chapel, which was built c.1200 and revived by the Lords of the Isles in the 14th century, are displayed late Mediaeval carved grave slabs. The B-listed chapel served as the parish church until c.1700.
