Located to the northeast of the village of Roslin is an area in which three engagements of the Wars of Independence took place between the Scottish and English armies. On the 24th February 1303, the Scottish force, numbering only 8000, defeated an English army of 30,000.
A monument marking the event has been built by volunteers of the Roslin Historical Society. It was unveiled by Captain George Burnet, Lord Lieutenant of Midlothian, on the 6th October 1994.
