Storr Lochs Hydro-Electric Power Scheme

A small hydro-electric power scheme on the east coast of the Trotternish peninsula in the Isle of Skye, 3 miles (5 km) north of Portree, the Storr Lochs comprise Lochs Fada and Leathan, with a dam at the northern end. The scheme has a generation capacity of 2.4 megawatts making use of a gross head of water of 136m (446 feet), which falls over steep cliffs on the east coast of the peninsula having produced an average of 8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year through the power station above. Built in 1950-2 to supply electricity to the isolated island community, the scheme is now an integral part of the national electricity supply network.
