Robert (Bertie) Charles Forbes

1880 - 1954

Journalist and financier. Forbes was born in New Deer (Aberdeenshire) and educated at the local Whitehill School. He emigrated for the USA in 1906, settling in New York, and founded the business review Forbes Magazine in 1917, which is promoted as the 'capitalist tool' and today has sales of $400 million.

He died in New York, but was buried in the cemetery at Culsh, to the north of New Deer. The family remain heavily involved in the company; Steve Forbes (b.1947), who has been a Republican presidential candidate, Christopher (Kip) Forbes (b.1950) and Robert Forbes are all executives, with an estimated combined fortune of $1.3 billion. The brothers maintain their Scottish connections and at one point the family owned Pitsligo Castle.
