Peter Sandilands

? - 1547

Clergyman. Sandilands was the younger son of the 5th Sandilands Knight of Calder, who had been granted 'the Lands of Calder' in 1348. He became Rector of the Kirk of Calder in 1526, the last Roman Catholic to hold this post, and in 1541 began building a new church. After the work had started and due to his advancing age a deed was drawn up detailing how the church should be finished and funds were provided for its completion. This was highly detailed and today provides architectural historians with mediaeval building terminology. Sandilands died in 1546/7 and the building of his church was continued by his nephew Sir James Sandilands, who become Lord Torphichen.
