Lieut-General Sir George Cathcart


1794 - 1854

Soldier. Son of Sir William Cathcart (1755 - 1843), he joined the army in 1810 and fought under his father with the Russian Army against the French. He then served as the Duke of Wellington's aide-de-camp at Waterloo (1815). Cathcart went on to become Governor of the Cape Colony (South Africa) in 1852 and won the 8th Kaffir War in 1853. Cathcart was killed in service at the Battle of Inkerman during the Crimean War and lies buried on Cathcart's Hill in the Crimea.
