Jacob More

1740 - 1793

Painter. More was born in Edinburgh, where he became a pupil of Alexander Runciman (1736-85). He was Scotland's greatest Neo-Classical painter, portraying strong formal structures viewed through diffused light. His works include The Falls of Clyde (1771).

In 1771, he travelled to Rome where he stayed for the remainder of his life. Despite success during his lifetime, he was almost forgotten after his death.
