William (Willie) Wood


1938 -

Bowls player. Born in Haddington (East Lothian), where he still lives, Wood plays for the Gifford Bowling Club. He first represented his country in 1966 and has subsequently played in a record-breaking seven Commonwealth Games, taking a bronze medal in the Singles competition in 1974, a silver in the Pairs (1978), gold in the Singles (1982) and skipped the Fours team to another gold in 1990. Wood is the most capped Scottish Commonwealth Games athlete ever. He was also successful in the World Championships, taking a gold in the Fours in 1980, a gold and silver in 1984, a silver in the Singles in 1988, a gold in the Fours in 1992, another gold in the Triples (1996) and bronzes in the Triples and Fours in 2000.

Wood was awarded an MBE in 1992.
