Championship bowler. Born in Edinburgh, Marshall followed a family tradition of lawn bowling at an early age. He first represented his country in 1988 and went on to have success in the World Championships and a record-breaking five times as World Indoor Singles Champion. He took gold medals in the Team, Pairs and Fours competitions in the World Outdoor Championships (1992). He followed this with a gold in the 1995 World Indoors Championship (Pairs), a gold in the Team event and a silver in the Pairs in the 1996 World Outdoor Championship, together with wins in the 1999 World Indoor Championships, the 2000 World Indoor and Outdoor Championships, the 2004 and 2012 Outdoor Championships.
Marshall won a gold medal with George Sneddon (b.1949) in the Men's Pairs Lawn Bowling Competition at the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester (2002) and another with Paul Foster (b.1973) in Melbourne (2006). In the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Marshall repeated his pairs win with Foster, and took a further gold medal in the Fours, playing alongside Paul Foster (b.1973), David Peacock (b.1970) and Neil Speirs (b.1979). Further success came at the Gold Coast Games of 2018, with gold and silver medals. In 2022, Marshall and Foster took a bronze medal in the pairs at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Marshall lives in Tranent (East Lothian) and was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List of 2007 for services to bowls.
