Sir John Forbes


1787 - 1861

Physician. Born at Cuttlebrae (near Buckie), Forbes was schooled in Aberdeen followed by Marischal College (University of Aberdeen) and the University of Edinburgh. After moving to England, he settled in London in 1840, where he was appointed physician to the Royal Household. He wrote a number of medical works, was an editor of the four-volume The Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine (1833-5) and wrote on his travels to Ireland, Germany and Austria.

He was knighted in 1853 and died at Whitchurch (Berkshire).
