John Lowrie Morrison

(Jolomo)

1948 -

Artist. Born in Glasgow, Morrison studied at Glasgow School of Art before training as a teacher at Jordanhill College (1973). Thereafter he moved to Tayvallich to take up a post in Lochgilphead High School. In 1997, Morrison began painting full-time. He is a prolific and disciplined artist, producing around 1000 works per year, each signed Jolomo. His works are characterised by bright colours and usually feature scenes from the West Coast of Scotland. They sell to collectors, including well known names such as pop-stars Madonna and Sting, and as posters to a broader public. One of Scotland's most financially successful artists, by 2003 Morrison was reported to be earning in excess of £1 million annually.

With strong religious beliefs, Morrison was ordained a lay preacher in 2002 and gives a sizeable percentage of his income to the church and charities. He was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours List of 2011.
