Alexander MacArthur

1901 - 1947

Unfortunate novelist. Living in Glasgow, MacArthur wrote the successful novel No Mean City (1935) which described the brutality of the razor-gangs of the Gorbals in the 1930s. MacArthur's novel horrified many Glaswegians with his portrait of drink, poverty and moral corruption.

MacArthur committed suicide in poverty on the banks of the Clyde before the success of his novel was apparent. A second novel No Bad Money was published posthumously in 1969.
