George Seton


(5th Earl of Winton)

c.1678 - 1749

Jacobite. The son of another George, the 4th Earl, Seton succeed to the Earldom of Winton on his father's death in 1704. He supported the Jacobite rising of 1715 and was captured at Preston on 14th November. He was tried the following year and found guilty of treason, condemned to death and his estates were forfeit. However, he managed to escape from the tower of London and eventually died in exile in Rome (Italy). The Earldom of Winton was extinguished on his death.
