Alexander Home

(3rd Lord Home)

? - 1516

Great Chamberlain of Scotland. Home's father, another Alexander, 2nd Lord Home (d. 1506), had also been Great Chamberlain of Scotland. Home had great influence during the reign of James IV. He was appointed Warden of the East and Middle Marches and, as such, led regular raids across the border to England, looting and pillaging. He fought at Flodden with his King, but before James was killed Home had led his men from the field on a mission of plunder. During the minority of James V, sided with his mother Margaret Tudor (1489 - 1541) against John Stuart, the 4th Duke of Albany (1481 - 1536), who Home had reluctantly asked to become Regent. Home negotiated with the English on the Queen's behalf and this brought a charge of treason. He escaped from Edinburgh Castle, recaptured and executed. His head was displayed outside the Edinburgh Tolbooth for four years.
