Jurist. Born the second son of Robert McDouall of Logan (Dumfries and Galloway), McDouall was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He wrote a three-volume Institute of the Laws of Scotland in Civil Rights (1751-3) which is still quoted and made comparisons between the laws of England and Scotland. In 1755, he was appointed a judge of the Court of Session in Edinburgh with the title Lord Bankton and owned Bankton House in East Lothian.
