Patrick Shirreff

1791 - 1876

Farmer and pioneer of cereal hybridisation. Born at Mungoswells (East Lothian), Shirreff was noted for producing several new varieties of oats and wheat. He worked at Haddington, where he was entertained to a public dinner in November 1869 in recognition of his work. An enthusiastic greyhound courser, his dog Simon won the Aberdeenshire Gold Cup in 1834.

He died unmarried and his feats are recorded on his father's memorial in Prestonkirk Churchyard (by East Linton).
