Nicola Benedetti


1987 -

Violinist. Born in West Kilbride (North Ayrshire) Benedetti developed her prodigious musical talent from the age of five and went on to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School. At the age of 16, she won the BBC's Young Musician of the Year award in 2004. She has gone on to play with most of the top British orchestras as well as considerable commercial success through contracts with Deutsche Grammophon (2004) and Decca (2011). She played at opening of Scottish Parliament in 2004. Benedetti was awarded one of the first honorary degrees from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2012, an MBE in the New Year's Honours List of 2013 and a CBE in 2019, in recognition of her services to music and charity. She played during the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, as the Commonwealth flag was raised.
