(2nd Lord Abercromby of Aboukir and Tullibody) 1770 - 1843
Lawyer and politician. Born into a noted military and legal family, the eldest son of General Sir Ralph Abercromby (1734 - 1801), the young Abercromby did not follow his father and brothers into the army, rather studying the law, which had been the profession of his grandfather. He was called to the Bar in 1794. In 1799, he married Montague, the daughter of the powerful Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (1742 - 1811). Abercromby served as Whig Member of Parliament for Edinburgh (1805-6) and for Clackmannanshire (1806-7 and 1812-5), resigning from the latter office in favour of his short-lived brother Sir John Abercromby (1772 - 1817). He inherited the Barony of Aboukir and Tullibody from his mother in 1821 and served as Lord-Lieutenant of Stirlingshire between 1837 and 1843.
