Sir Moir Lockhead

1945 -

Entrepreneur. Born in a mining village in NE England, Lockhead left school at fifteen and began his career as an apprentice mechanic. He came to Scotland as Chief Engineer with Glasgow City Transport in 1979, a difficult time when the refurbished underground was about to re-open. He moved to Aberdeen to join Grampian Regional Transport as General Manager in 1985. He was one of a small group of individuals who bought this organisation on the deregulation of public transport in 1989, saw its listing on the Stock Exchange in 1994 and built the resulting First Group into an international travel operator, serving as its Chief Executive and Deputy Chairman. Still headquartered in Aberdeen, First Group is now the largest transport operator on the UK and second-largest in the USA, running bus, rail and freight services worth £2.7 billion per year and with some 67,000 employees internationally.

Lockhead is an amateur farmer and breeder of Highland Cattle on his 121-ha (300-acre) Glassel estate on Royal Deeside, which he has revitalised since taking ownership.

He was knighted in 2008, awarded an OBE in 1996 and holds an Honorary Chair in Transport at the University of Aberdeen.
