James Black


1879 - 1949

Clergyman. Educated at the University of Glasgow and the United Free Church College in Edinburgh, Black was ordained into the United Free Church of Scotland in Forres in 1903 and took charge of Broughton Place UF Church in Edinburgh (1907-21). He moved to St. George's West UF Church in 1921 becoming a well-respected preacher and joined the Church of Scotland with this congregation when the UF church merged in 1929. He was elected Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1938 and appointed Chaplain to the King in 1942. Black was also the author of several successful religious books.
