David Michael Barclay Sole


1962 -

Rugby internationalist. Born in Aylesbury (England), to Scottish parents, Sole was educated at Glenalmond College (near Perth) and played rugby for Edinburgh Academicals. His international debut came at Murrayfield against France in 1986, with Scotland winning 18-17. He gained 44 caps, including 25 as captain. He toured Australia with the successful British Lions team in 1989 and led Scotland to their Grand Slam victory of 1990. He played his last international match in 1992, against Australia.

Sole was awarded an OBE in 1993 and has worked as an executive with in the whisky industry. He makes occasional appearances as a commentator and also serves as a charity fund-raiser. He lives in Edinburgh.
