David Morrison

1913 - 2006

Veteran athlete. Born in Hamilton, Morrison joined Shettleston Harriers in 1933, serving the club as athlete, coach, official and administrator during more than 70 years of membership. He began as a long-jumper, was also competent in the throwing events but excelled in running. It was as a veteran that he made his name with a remarkable series of Scottish, British and World records achieved in his sixties and seventies. Aged 75, he set a world record in the 10000m, breaking the British 5000m record at the same time. He broke indoor 3000m record at the Kelvin Hall in 1991. Morrison was still actively competing and coaching in his late eighties and ran his last race aged 91.

He regularly acted as a referee in track and field events, including serving as Chief Field Event Judge at both the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, and on the Highland Games circuit. Morrison was an Honorary Life Member of Scottish Athletics.

He died in Airdrie.
