Overview of Agnes Miller Parker

Book illustrator and engraver. Born in Irvine (North Ayrshire), Parker trained at Glasgow School of Art (1911-17), where she worked for a short time before marrying a fellow student, the painter William McCance (1894 - 1970), and moving to England. With her husband, she worked as an illustrator for the famous Gregynog Press in Wales for some years. Noted particularly for her distinctive wood engravings, she illustrated books including The Fables of Aesop (1931), H.E. Bate's Through the Woods (1936) and A.E. Houseman's A Shropshire Lad (1940), together with editions of Shakespeare and works by T.E. Lawrence.

She returned to Glasgow in 1955 and latterly lived at Lamlash on Arran, but died in Greenock. Her papers are held by National Library of Scotland.
