Stuart Sutcliffe

1940 - 1962

Pop musician. Born in Edinburgh, the son of a school-teacher, Sutcliffe was raised on Merseyside (England). He studied at Liverpool College of Art, where he met John Lennon (1940-80) and together with George Harrison and Paul McCartney, formed a pop-group initially called The Quarrymen which eventually became The Beatles.

Sutcliffe left the band in 1961, while they were working in Hamburg and before they were famous, to concentrate on his art. He remained in Hamburg where he was tutored by Eduardo Paolozzi (1924 - 2005). However, he died the following year from a cerebral haemorrhage. In 1967, the Beatles included Sutcliffe's image on the cover of their Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album as a memorial.
