Businessman and enthusiastic golfer. Born into a bus-building dynasty in Falkirk, Alexander was educated at Loretto School and the University of Cambridge. In 1973, he succeeded his father as Chairman and Managing Director of Walter Alexander plc and was responsible for the company's diversification. His other business interests included serving as a Director of the Clydesdale Bank. In public service, Alexander worked with the Police Dependants Trust, was Chairman of the Professional Golfers' Association and was Captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (appointed 1980) in St. Andrews, where he had made his home. He was awarded a CBE in 1984.
Alexander was a member of several prestigious golf-clubs, not least being one of the first Scots to be invited to join the Pine Valley Club (New Jersey, USA).
He died in St. Andrews. His company is now known as Alexander Dennis.
