John Anderson

1794 - 1870

Merchant and banker. Born in Bo'ness, the only son of a teacher, Anderson owned several whaling ships and was a partner in an oil-works which processed whale-blubber in the town. In 1842, he became the first chairman of the Bo'ness Gas Company and went on to endow the Anderson Academy in the town.

Anderson lies buried in Lower Churchyard in Bo'ness, but is remembered by a memorial at the entrance to the new cemetery, unveiled in 1904.
