Archibald Campbell-Colquhoun


c.1754 - 1820

Politician and lawyer. The son of John Campbell of Clathick (Perth and Kinross), who was a merchant and Provost of Glasgow, Campbell-Colquhoun trained as a lawyer at the University of Glasgow and was called to the Bar in 1779. He added his mother's surname on inheriting the estate of Killermont (East Dunbartonshire). He also inherited Garscadden, another estate which had belonged to his mother's family. Campbell-Colquhoun was a Sheriff in Perthshire (1793 - 1807) and then as the Member of Parliament for the Elgin Burghs (1807-10) and for Dunbartonshire (1810-20). He served as Lord Advocate (1807-16) and Lord Clerk Register (1816-20). He was also a partner in the Thistle Bank in Glasgow and Rector of the University of Glasgow (1807-09).

Campbell-Colquhoun died at Hartham (Wiltshire, England) at the home of his son-in-law, Walter Long, and was buried in the kirkyard at New Kilpatrick.
