David Smart

1824 - 1914

Architect. Born in Alyth, Smart worked for many years in Edinburgh with David Bryce (1803-76) where he became a proponent of the Baronial style. Smart left and began to practice in Perth, where he was responsible for a number of domestic, commercial and industrial buildings, including the remodelling of the interior of Perth Sheriff Court (1866-7), together with churches in Forteviot (1867), Dunkeld (1864) and Blairgowrie (1887). His most notable work was probably the restyling and extension of Balhousie Castle for the Earl of Kinnoull in 1862-3.

Smart worked well into his eighties and died in Perth at the age of ninety, leaving a sizeable estate.
