Murdoch (Murdo) Paterson


1826 - 1898

Civil engineer. Born in Inverness, where he was educated at the Royal Academy, Paterson served as an apprentice to Joseph Mitchell (1803-83), who he helped build the Highland Railway, taking over the construction when Mitchell suffered a stroke in 1862. Paterson served as Chief Engineer to the Highland Railway (1875-97) and was responsible for the Findhorn and Nairn Viaducts, together with the Waterloo Bridge in Inverness (1896) and the lines to the north and to Kyle of Lochalsh.

He died at Culloden. There is a plaque in his memory next to the platforms in Inverness Station.
