Lady Flora was a daughter of Loudoun Castle, near Galston, East Ayrshire. She became a Lady-in-Waiting of the young Queen Victoria, but died the innocent victim of illness. However gossip circulated which was to hurt the Queen's popularity in the early days of her reign and led to eggs being thrown at her coach.
Lady Flora's grave is in Loudoun Old Parish Kirk. She is commemorated by Lady Flora's Institute at Newmilns, which is now a housing complex for elderly people.
