Golfer. Born in Edinburgh, Matthew was brought up in North Berwick. She was educated at North Berwick High School and then gained a golf scholarship to the University of Stirling, graduating in accountancy in 1992.
Matthew won the Scottish Amateur title on three occasions (1991, 1993 and 1994), and gained the British Amateur title in 1993. In 1994 she turned professional and went on to prove a consistent, if not outstanding, performer on the international golf circuit. She won the Australian Women's Open in 1996 and the McDonald's WPGA Championship at Gleneagles (King's Course) in 1998. In 2009, she became the first Scot to win the Women's British Open, her first major tournament win. This win was all the more remarkable because it came two months after the birth of her second daughter and days after narrowly escaping a hotel fire.
