Sir Robert Jardine


1825 - 1905

Trader and politician. Born in Edinburgh, the nephew of William Jardine (1784 - 1843) the opium trader who founded the Jardine Matheson Company in Hong Kong. Jardine took over as head of this company from his brother David. He built Castlemilk in Annandale as his home in 1865. Elected as Liberal Member of Parliament for Ashburton in Devon in the same year, he sat until 1868 when the constituency was abolished. He went on to serve the Dumfries Burghs until 1874 and then Dumfriesshire (1880-92). He was knighted in 1885.
