Sarah (Cissie) Gillow Marshall Stewart

1911 - 2008

Olympic swimmer and pioneering sports woman. Born in Dundee, Stewart was a member of the Dundee Belmont Swimming Club. As a member of a team including fellow Scot Ellen King (1909-94), she won a silver medal in the 4×100m freestyle relay in the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and was placed fourth in the 400m freestyle. She also won bronze medals for Scotland in the 400 yard freestyle and the 4×100 yards freestyle relay in the first British Empire Games which took place in Ontario (Canada) in 1930. Her team for the latter event included Ellen King (1909-94) and Jean McDowell (1908 - 2000). Stewart later married a journalist, becoming Sarah Hunter, and moved to Glasgow. She died at Belhaven Nursing Home in Troon (South Ayrshire) and her funeral took place at Masonhill Crematorium.
