William David Murray


(4th Earl of Mansfield)

1806 - 1898

Politician. Murray succeeded his father to the Earldom of Mansfield in 1843. He was elected as Tory Member of Parliament for various English constituencies between 1830 and 1837, serving as a Lord of the Treasury in Robert Peel's government (1834-35). He was Member for Perthshire from 1837-40. He played an active role in the House of Lords, eventually becoming Father of the House. He also served as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and Lieutenant-Colonel of the Stirlingshire Militia (1828-55). Murray was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Clackmannanshire in 1852 and a Knight of the Thistle in 1843.

He was succeeded by his grandson.
