Sir Archibald Murray of Blackbarony


? - c.1700

Soldier and royal servant. He was son of Sir Alexander Murray of Blackbarony, who was Sheriff of Peeblesshire. King Charles II appointed Murray Lieutenant-Colonel of the Militia Regiment drawn from the counties of Linlithgowshire and Peeblesshire. He was appointed Royal Master of Works in 1689 by King William II, filling the post which had been vacant since Sir William Bruce's dismissal in 1678. He occupied Barony Castle in the Scottish Borders and made plans to extend it, work undertaken by his son.
