Prof. (Henry) Harvey Littlejohn


1862 - 1927

Forensic scientist. Born in Edinburgh, the son of Sir Henry Littlejohn (1826 - 1914), he was educated at Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh. After completing his education on the Continent, he took up the position of Lecturer at the School of Medicine for Women in Edinburgh, founded in 1886 by Sophia Jex Blake (1840 - 1912). In 1891, he moved to Sheffield, becoming Medical Health Officer to the city and Lecturer in Forensic Medicine at the University there. He returned to Edinburgh to become assistant to his father, who had been appointed to the Chair of Medical Jurisprudence at the University of Edinburgh. Littlejohn was regarded as an excellent lecturer, who spoke without notes and brought drama to the lecture theatre. In 1906, he succeeded his father as Chair of Forensic Medicine. He was appointed Chief Police Surgeon in Edinburgh in 1906 and was involved in providing evidence in numerous interesting legal cases.

He died in an Edinburgh nursing home.
